Parts of leather

TANNED LEATHER, regardless of the type of tanning used, can be divided into several sections. Each of these is usually used for different types of work.

Thus, the parts of a tanned hide are: NECK, CRUPON, DESFALDADOS, BELLY, and LEAVES.

THE NECK

This is the front part. This part of the leather often has many wrinkles, sometimes very pronounced, depending on the age of the animal. Its thickness tends to be very irregular.

CRUPON

Crupón, also called double crupón, is the lumbar part of the animal. It is the most valuable part of the leather due to its uniform thickness and homogeneous appearance.

BELLY

The belly, as its name indicates, is the part that covered the animal's abdomen. Its thickness is irregular and it tends to be a slightly more elastic and spongy leather than the rest.

DESFALDADOS

This is the part that includes both the crupón and the neck of the animal.

LEAVES

We call leaves the two pieces of leather that result from dividing the total leather in two from its center. Each piece is a leaf.
